There are lots of things to think of when you’re planning a trip or short vacation. Travellers can face many unknown and unexpected situations. Purchasing extra insurance is not usually something high on our lists. Somewhere between packing the sun block and our bathing suits we forgot that bad things can and do happen.
I will be the first to admit that may times, while on a budget and ignorant of the dangers, took trips withou even the basic coverage. One suggestion, should you have the means, is to get your self a credit card that is specifically for travellers.
Depending on where you are you can often get a gold card with various insurance packages included for a low annual fee. Bare in mind that this is not the typical credit card that you would use every day. This is one that you reserve for special purpose. These would include, renting a car, booking hotels and buying airline tickets. For the frequent traveller, or the occasional tourist these cards can help you save money and increase your peace of mind greatly.
Many of you have Travel Medical Insurance from your employer health plans. This is an other option, however it does not provide the benefits of automatic insurance for rental cars for example.
If you’ve ever rented a car in Latin America you will know that extra insurance is a must. It just makes good common sense no mater if your destination is Cancun or Cuba.
My passport gold card helps be accumulate points that are redeemable for various other travel purchases and has a whole gambit of other protection available when I book any portion of my trip using this card. So, instead of paying in cash and scrimping on the insurance coverage. I put it all on the gold card and pay the card off right away.
I get the points, I get free insurance, and I sleep much better even if the hotel is next to a train station.
