There is something quite surreal about spending Christmas holiday in a warmer climate. Especially when you come from a place that is well known for snow and winter activities such as Canada. While a 6 hour flight can wear you out let me tell you that it’s well worth it. Mexico offers a very rich culture, the people are friendly and the facilities can be first rate.

When I tell the average person that we were in Mexico, they initially respond with a comment about lying on the beach, with sun, sand and a margarita. This is often the ideal image for a vacation or southern getaway that most North Americans have. However there is really so much more to Latin America than beaches and palm trees.

The city of Guadalajara is the capital of the state of Jalisco. Jalisco is better know for the popular tourist destination of Puerto Vallarta, located on the pacific coast. Bathed in sun and surf, Puerto Vallarta does make an excellent destination on it’s own. However Guadalajara and surrounding areas make up the crown jewels of what is the colonial centre of a wonderful country. Today’s city of Guadalajara was founded in the Atemajac Valley way back in 1542. As you can imagine a city that old has some wonderful history and culture. It is said that the wife of one of the founders, known for her strong personality, was tired of wandering around the wilderness and of the constant native attacks. She proclaimed that she was happy where they were and she would go no further. I’m glad she did.

From the beautiful architecture to the excellent food and and first class accommodations Guadalajara has it all for the travelling spirit. Truly a gem worth discovering
